Sarah Main DBC

What is your role at DBC and what does a typical day look like for you?

I’m an Account Executive at DBC, and I’ve been here almost two years. My days are a mix of writing, keeping up with industry news, and working closely with my teams to move client initiatives forward. On any given day, I might be drafting pitches, pulling together research for a POV, or connecting with reporters to find the right angles for our clients’ stories. There’s also the classic PR juggling act – managing deadlines, jumping on timely opportunities, and pivoting whenever something unexpected pops up. What I love most is that each day feels different; there’s always something new happening in the adtech and marketing world, and that keeps the work exciting and fast-paced.

How do you explain your job to friends or family who don’t work in PR/marketing or know the adtech space?

Most people have a very misguided idea of what PR actually is. Thanks to TV shows and movies, some assume I spend my days putting out scandals or “spinning” stories, and younger people often confuse it with influencer gifting because of social media. I usually start by breaking down that “public relations” is really about helping companies communicate clearly – something every brand needs. I’ll equate it to a time they tried to explain themselves and felt misunderstood, so they get the importance of what we do. As for adtech, I keep it simple. I’ll point to a commercial on TV or an online ad and explain why that specific ad was delivered to them. But that’s about as far as I’ll go.

What’s your favorite or least favorite industry buzz word and why?

“Authenticity” is my least favorite. It’s been used so much – especially in the creator economy – that it’s basically lost all meaning. At this point, I’d be totally fine never hearing it again.

What are you watching (or re-watching) on streaming right now?

Dancing with the Stars on Disney+! I grew up watching all the big ABC shows with my grandma – The Bachelor, DWTS, Grey’s Anatomy – so it’s pure comfort TV for me. And yes, I’m fully aware that Grey’s has been on forever, but I can’t walk away now.

What emoji best describes your personality or vibe at work?

🤪

This or That?

Embargo vs Exclusive strategies

Exclusive! The industry seems to be leaning that way already, and it always feels like a bigger, more meaningful win for the client.

Pen & paper notes or Google Docs?

I use Google Docs for pretty much everything. But I still keep a notebook on my desk for daily to-dos or quick notes, mostly so I don’t forget how to hold a pen.
